FAQ
What are those black streaks on my roof?
More than likely, it's a species of cyanobacteria called Gloecapsa Magma. Most people refer to it as an algae, a common name for all things photosynthetic that are not plants. It is predominantly on the north or west side of roofs.
What else could be on my roof?
There are numerous possibilities such as mold, mildew, fungus and bacteria but we see moss and lichens the most. (Lichens are a cross between an algae and a fungus.)
Is it bad for me or my family?
Having different biological growths, bacteria or fungi on your roof releasing millions of airborne spores around your home is not favorable, especially if you or a loved one suffers from allergies. Additionally, the algae on your roof can enter the attic through your roof's ventilation.
Is it damaging my roof?
The algae colonies are taking root, dislodging shingle granules. Algae and moss also retain moisture, intensifying UV rays, which break down the shingle's protective coating. Lichens do the most damage. Lichens have the strongest root structure and will completely dislodge all of your shingle granules underneath their growth.
How do you clean my roof?
We spray a chemical solution which instantly starts killing biological growth. We have a controlled method which limits overspray. We allow it to dwell on the roof prior to rinsing. We then rinse with a low pressure, high volume of water. After the roof is rinsed, we spray a fungicide based solution on the entire roof to ensure all growth is killed.
Is cleaning my roof safe?
This is a really important question and the answer depends on how it is being cleaned. Our method is safe for your roof and surroundings. But there are other methods.

If high pressure is used, shingle granules will be dislodged, shortening the life of your roof. (We do not use high pressure.)

If caustic chemicals like sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) are used, they must be used correctly. Sodium hydroxide must be diluted to a reasonable level and not allowed to dwell for too long on the roof. Also, it can't be allowed to dry, which is difficult in summer, especially when the sun is out. (We do not use sodium hydroxide.)

If corrosive chemicals like sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or sodium metasilicate are used, it is impossible to kill the biological growth without using an unsafe amount of chemical. (Bleach is made from passing chlorine through caustic soda) If safe amounts of bleach were used in the cleaning of your roof, the biological growth would still be alive and the stains would only be diminished and not completely gone.

Central Ohio Roof Restoration has developed a combination of chemicals in safe amounts, whose composition has proven results in the complete removal of biological growths and the stains they cause.

Will your chemicals damage my landscaping?
No. All landscaping is watered during our process and any chemical that is rinsed off the roof is diluted to the point where it cannot harm landscaping.

Once my roof is cleaned, will the stains return?
Unfortunately, yes. The bacteria spores are airborne and will return. However, all of our cleanings come with a 3 year stain free guarantee. Additionally, we offer a lifetime guarantee that requires subsequent algaecide treatments every three years.

Do I have to be home for a free estimate or for a cleaning?
No. We can inspect your roof and leave an estimate for your review. We can also clean your roof without interfering with your schedule.

Can you clean other things?
Yes. You already get a free gutter cleaning with our roof cleaning service and we can power wash your entire house, brick, stone or concrete surfaces, decks or fencing.
